Lunar Arcade: Game Awards 2020 – Check Out the Winners!

The Game Awards started in 2014 with a ceremony on the Oscars style for videogames released throughout the year and around the world!

And, as we know, on December 10 we had the 2020 edition – with great expectations for some titles and even some surprises during the winners announcements (at least for me, honestly).

So, you lost the Game Awards? Didn’t manage to watch the live? Are tou looking for a list with the winners?

Fret not, because with Artemis there’s no trouble!

Today, our train has many stops through the stations of the Game Awards and you can check the categories and winners with me!

Let’s go!

Game Awards 2020

I think the greater expectative was on The Last of Us Part II in many categories, but I think there was a good amount of people rooting for games like Hades, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, Fortnite and even Animal Crossing.

I separated them in subcategories so we can visualize it easier!

Here we have categories like: Best Team, Best Host, Best Game, Best Event, Best Coach and Best Athlete. Let’s check the result!

Best Esports Team

  • Damwon Gaming | League of Legends
  • Dallas Empire | Call of Duty
  • G2 Esports | League of Legends – GANHADOR
  • San Francisco Shock | Overwatch League
  • Team Secret | DOTA2

Best Esports Host

  • Alex “Goldenboy” Mendez
  • Alex “Machine” Richardson
  • Eefje “Sjokz” Depoortere – GANHADORA
  • James “Dash” Patterson
  • Jorien “Sheever” Van Der Heijden

And hooray for female representation on E-sports!!

Best Esports Game

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare | Infinity Ward/Raven/Activision
  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive | Valve
  • Fortnite | Epic Games
  • League of Legends | Riot Games – GANHADOR
  • Valorant | Riot Games

I think League is already a classic on the E-sports category. I remember playing it when it was just released and now seeing the proportion it took it’s so cool!

Best Esports Event

League of Legends Championship (image source: the sports rush)
  • Blast Premier: Spring 2020 European Finals | CS:GO
  • Call of Duty League Championship 2020 | Call of Duty
  • IEM Katowice 2020 |CS:GO
  • League of Legends World Championship 2020 | League of Legends – GANHADOR
  • Overwarch League Grand Finals 2020 | Overwatch

And no one shocked with the classic League winning as best championship. The dimension of Lol championships is insane.

Best Esports Coach

  • Danny “Zonic” Sorensen | CS:GO – GANHADOR
  • Dae-Hee “Crusty” Park | OWL
  • Fabian “Grabbz” Lohmann | LOL
  • Lee “Zeffa” Jae-Min | LOL
  • Raymond “Rambo” Lussier | COD

Best Esports Athlete

  • Ian “Crimsix” Porter | Call of Duty
  • Heo “Showmaker” Su | League of Legends – GANHADOR
  • Kim “Canyon” Geon-Bu | League of Legends
  • Anthony “Shotzzy” Cuevas-Castro | Call of Duty
  • Matthieu “Zywoo” Herbaut | CS: GO

Content Creator of the Year

  • Alanah Pearce
  • Jay Ann Lopez
  • Nickmercs
  • Timthetatman
  • Valkyrae – GANHADORA

I’m happy to see a woman winning as content creator and even more for having three women competing on this category!!

Now, personal opinion: where is Alanzoka, huh Game Awards?! Hahaha for real, he is my favourite streamer and someone I always watch when he brings new games: whenever there’s a new release – SPECIALLY horror games – I go to his Twitch to check it out.

I think people outside Brazil better have their eyes on Alan every year, you know. In my opinion, he’d win every time, just like our dearest Meryl Streep at the Oscars.

Best Games and Their Aspects in General

Here we have categories of best games per genre and their aspects, like for example direction, art, performances, music and etc. Let’s take a look how 2020 was!

Best Multiplayer Game

Among Us image (image source: tecnoblog)
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons | Nintendo
  • Among Us | Innersloth – GANHADOR
  • Call of Duty: Warzone | Infinity Ward/Activision/Raven Software
  • Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout | Mediatonic/Devolver
  • Valorant | Riot Games

AMONGAS!! (That’s how we call it in Brazil)

I think it’s pretty cool it won on this category – because we all know the hype on this game in 2020 was absurd. I CAN’T STAND hearing people talking about Among Us anymore, but I thought it was nice they won! Hahaha a small team and developer, I thought it was nice they won on big ones like Nintendo, Riot and Activision.

Best Sports/Racing Game

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 Poster (image source: ign)
  • Dirt 5 | Codemasters Cheshire/Codemasters
  • F1 2020 | Codemasters Birmingham/Codemasters
  • FIFA 21 | EA Vancouver/EA Romania
  • NBA 2k21 | Visual Concepts/2k
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 | Vicarious Visions/Activision – GANHADOR

At this moment I was like: WHAAAAAAT, TONY HAWK’S WON ON FIFA?! Hahaha I think FIFA is already an entity on sports games – and I have to say I’m not that much of a fan – and I thought it would take the prize more because of the game proportion than anything else. Then there’s Tony Hawk’s and I’m shocked!

I remember playing Proving Ground with my friend at school on PS2. I sucked, but Tony Hawk’s has always been fun and an interesting variation of sports games that doesn’t go to the racing types!

(I’d start talking about my Roland Garros on Play Station 1, but that’s a subject for another day)

Best Sim/Strategy Game

Image of the game Microsoft Flight Simulator (image source: transcendentegame)
  • Crusader Kings III | Paradox Development Studio/Paradox
  • Desperados III | Mimimi Games/THQN
  • Gears Tactics | Splash Damage/The Coalition/Xbox Game Studios
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator | ASOBO/Xbox Game Studios – GANHADOR
  • Xcom: Chimera Squad | Firaxis/2k

Time for the unfunny joke of the day: at least we didn’t have The Sims, because EA is already on a mercenary level with this game that it’s already a joke.

And second comment: Mimimi Games. I’d name my studio like that.

Now on a more serious tone, I never thought the Flight Simulator series too exciting (but I’m a fan of action packed games, like Devil May Cry, so you can have an idea whi), but I saw moments of the game and hey, the sceneries are really mesmerizing. It must be an interesting experience!

Best Family Game

Animal Crossing (image source: ign)
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons | Nintendo – GANHADOR
  • Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time | Toys for Bob/Activision
  • Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout | Mediatonic/Devolver
  • Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit | Velan Studios/Nintendo
  • Minecraft Dungeons | Mojang/Double Eleven/Xbox Game Studios
  • Paper Mario: The Origami King | Intelligent Systems/Nintendo

Hahaha this is a category that’s a lot of personal opinion for me, because, even though I haven’t played the game that was just released, Crash was one of the games I played a lot alongside my dad on my PS1. So it’ll always be a game with great memories and I’ll always think it deserves the best awards!

But, Animal Crossing. I’m not much of a Nintendo fan (yes, forgive me, but Mario, Zelda and such are not much my vibe), but Animal Crossing was SUCH A HUGE fever around the world that I think it was fair!

Best Fighting Game

Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate (image source: store nintendo)
  • Granblue Fantasy: Versus | Arc System Works/Cygames/Xseed
  • Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate | Netherrealm Studios/WB Games – GANHADOR
  • Street Fighter V: Champion Edition | Dimps/Capcom
  • One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows | Spike Chunsoft/Bandai Namco
  • Under Night In-Birth EXE Late (CL-R) | French Bread/Arc System Works/Aksys

Aaaaah, great memories playing Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat on the arcades. Although I’m a big Capcom fan, Mortal Kombat as a winner on this category I think it isn’t much of a surprise – there are many games that don’t follow the big franchises, but I think in this aspect, it would be a surprise for me if it was something like Tony Hawk’s winning on FIFA.

Again, it’s my personal opinion!

Best Role Playing Game

Cloud and Sephiroth in Final Fantasy (image source: ign)
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake | Square Enix – GANHADOR
  • Genshin Impact | Mihoyo
  • Persona 5 Royal | Atlus/P Studio/SEGA
  • Wasteland 2 | Inxile/Deep Silver
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon | Ryu Ga Gutoku/SEGA

Honestly, I thought that Genshin Impact would take this one, again because of the hype. It’s like Animal Crossing and Among Us: I CAN’T STAND HEARING PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THIS GAME ANYMORE. Hahahaha so, I thought it was going to Genshin, although I thought Final Fantasy or Yakuza seemed like better options to me (from what I saw of the games, I didn’t play them yet). So, seeing Final Fantasy winning was a surprise that made me glad!

Best Action/Adventure Game

Ellie in The Last of Us Part II (image source: naughty dog)
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla | Ubisoft Montreal
  • Ghost of Tsushima | Sucker Punch/SIE
  • Marvel’s Spider-man: Miles Morales | Insomniac Games/SIE
  • Ori and the Will of Wisps | Moon Studos/Xbox Game Studios
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order | Respawn/EA
  • The Last of Us Part II | Naughty Dog/SIE – GANHADOR

Look, on this one I really didn’t know what the result would be.

Although everyone was talking a lot about The Last of Us, we have pretty huge games I heard a lot of people talking about. Star Wars seems to have a nice action mechanics, Ghost of Tsushima has a beautiful ambience, Spider-man was a game that got me unaware and impressed me, Ori is the most beautiful thing on planet earth and Assassin’s Creed is already a classic I think everyone expected a viking chapter.

So the competition was difficult! I knew Last of Us would probably take it, but it wasn’t easy.

Best Action Game

Hades (image source: gamblast)
  • Doom Eternal | ID Software/Bethesda
  • Hades | Supergiant Games – GANHADOR
  • Half-Life: Alyx | Valve
  • Nioh 2 | Team Ninja
  • Streets of Rage 4 | Dotemu

I know there was a lot of people rooting for Hades and I think it was well deserved! But, just like before, the competition wasn’t easy. Hades was a game that’s shining, but others from the category wasn’t that far away from it.

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla |Ubisoft Montreal
  • Grounded | Obsidian Entertainment
  • Hyperdot | Tribe Games
  • The Last of Us Part II | Naughty Dog/SIE – GANHADOR
  • Watch Dogs Legion | Ubisoft Toronto

A category I think is very interesting, to increase accessibility of people to the game and make it able for being played by a greater audience. Indeed, congrats not only to the team at Naughty Dog, but of all the developers who put an effort on this aspect!

Best VR/AR Game

Half-Life: Alyx (image source: ign)
  • Dreams | Media Molecule/SIE
  • Half-Life: Alyx | Valve – GANHADOR
  • Marvel’s Iron Man VR | Camouflaj/SIE
  • Star Wars: Squadrons | Motive Studios/SIE
  • The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners | Skydance Interactive

Best Community Support

Fall Guys poster (image source: humble bundle)
  • Apex Legends | Respawn/EA
  • Destiny 2 | Bungie
  • Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout | Mediatonic/Devolver – GANHADOR
  • Fortnite | Epic Games
  • No Man’s Sky | Hello Games
  • Valorant | Riot Games

Best Mobile Game

  • Among Us | Innersloth – GANHADOR
  • Call of Duty Mobile | Timi Studios/Activision
  • Genshin Impact | Mihoyo
  • Legends of Runaterra | Riot Games
  • Pokémon Cafe Mix | Genius Sonority

Again, Among Us winning on big names – and on Genshin Impact even!! I was impressed and happy, it’s not a coincidence the lady who thanked in the name of the team even cried, it was so cute. I was very happy for them!

Best Indie Game

  • Carrion | Phobia Game Studio/Devolver
  • Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout | Mediatonic/Devolver
  • Hades | Supergiant Games – GANHADOR
  • Spelunky 2 | Mossmouth, LCC
  • Spiritfarer | Thunder Lotus Games

Best Ongoing Game

No Man’s Sky poster (image source: playstation store)
  • Apex Legends | Respawn/EA
  • Destiny 2 | Bungie
  • Call of Duty: Warzone | Infinity Ward/Activision/Raven Software
  • Fortnite | Epic Games
  • No Man’s Sky | Hello Games – GANHADOR

Look, I really thought Fortnite would win, again because of the game proportion – in addition that I’m always seeing something about new content on it. So it was a good surprise to see another winner on the list!

Games For Impact

Tell Me Why (image source: xbox news)
  • If Found… | Dreamfeel
  • Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition | Cardboard Computer
  • Spiritfarer | Thunder Lotus Games
  • Tell Me Why | Dontenod Entertainment/Xbox Game Studios – GANHADOR
  • Through the Darkest of Times | Paintbucket Games

A very interesting category! I think that, apart from the winner, all games on it are worthy of being checked out – after all, they are on the list for their social impact. Again, congrats to all developers for making such an intresting work that adds positivity on society!

Best Performance

Abby from The Last of Us Part II (image source: inverse)
  • Ashley Johnson como Ellie | The Last of Us Part II
  • Laura Bailey como Abby | The Last of Us Part II – GANHADORA
  • Daisuke Tsuji como Jin Sakai | Ghost of Tsushima
  • Logan Cunningham como Hades | Hades
  • Nadji Jeter como Miles Morales | Marvel’s Spider-man: Miles Morales

Best Audio Design

  • Doom Eternal | ID Software/Bethesda
  • Half-Life: Alyx | Valve
  • Ghost of Tsushima | Sucker Punch/SIE
  • Resident Evil 3 | Capcom
  • The Last of Us Part II | Naughty Dog/SIE – GANHADOR

Best Score and Music

  • Doom Eternal | Composed by Mick Gordon
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake | Composed by Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu and Mitsuto Suzuki – GANHADOR
  • Hades | Composed by Darren Korb
  • Ori and the Will of Wisps | Composed by Gareth Coker
  • The Last of Us Part II | Composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, Additional Music by Mac Quayle

If I say I wasn’t rooting for Ori, I’d be lying. The scores for this series are always too beautiful – but Final Fantasy is also excellent. Personal taste: I’d go with Ori!

Best Art Direction

Ghost of Tsushima (image source: gamereactor)
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake | Square Enix
  • Ghost of Tsushima | Sucker Punch/SIE – GANHADOR
  • Hades | Supergiant Games
  • Ori and the Will of Wisps | Moon Studios/Xbox Games Studios
  • The Last of Us Part II | Naughty Dog/SIE

Best Narrative

  • 12 Sentinels: Aegis Rim | Written by George Kamitami
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake | Written by Kazushige Nojima, Motomu Toriyama, Hiroaki Iwaki and Sachie Hirano
  • Ghost of Tsushima | Written by Ian Ryan, Liz Albl, Patrick Downs, Jordan Lemos and Nate Fox
  • Hades | Written by Greg Kasavin
  • The Last of Us Part II | Written by Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross – GANHADOR

Best Game Direction

Keanu Reeves hosting the category on Game Awards 2020 (image source: youtube)
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake | Square Enix
  • Ghost of Tsushima | Sucker Punch/SIE
  • Hades | Supergiant Games
  • Half-Life: Alyx | Valve
  • The Last of Us Part II | Naughty Dog/SIE – GANHADOR

What made me happy on this category was the presentation from Keanu Reeves, judge me.

And it warmed my heart when he thanked the guys at CD Projekt for calling him to be part of Cyberpunk 2077 as Johnny Silverhand when CD Projekt wasn’t even as a nominee. How not to love Keanu Reeves?

Game of the Year

Christopher Nolan hosting the category at Game Awards 2020 (image source: the gamepad gamer)
  • Doom Eternal | ID Software/Bethesda
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake | Square Enix
  • Ghost of Tsushima | Sucker Punch/SIE
  • Hades | Supergiant Games
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons | Nintendo
  • The Last of Us Part II | Naughty Dog/SIE – GANHADOR

I think EVERYONE expected the prize to Last of Us – but I think any game that won on this list would be a good choice except… Well, you already know my opinion. I have to admit I feared a little when I saw Animal Crossing on the list, because, besides being a great game for families and the like, if it won on a Hades or a Last of Us it would be like one of those ridiculous Oscars that EVERYONE but the Academy disagrees, you know?

But amen, we got Last of Us this year and I thought it was more than fair.

(Again, personal opinion, don’t kill me! Hahaha)

In general, I liked it a lot! We had Keanu Reeves, Eddie Vedder singing Future Days which was part of Last of Us, Christopher Nolan, Gal Gadot, Tom Holland, Brie Larson and other famous names participating in the 2020 edition. It was a nice event, with good prizes and announcements of games that’ll come next year!

Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam on Game Awards 2020

Although, none of the announced games got me really excited. I think what marked me more was seeing Vin Diesel as a protagonist on Ark II that will come in the future, apart from strong names from the movies – such as Michelle Yeoh, David Tennant, Russel Crowe, among others – in an Ark animated series.

We also had announcements for Mass Effect and Dragon Age as future releases. The Callisto Protocol seems to be something interesting to take a look, with a horror vibe kinda on a Dead Space style. Perfect Dark, although there isn’t a release date yet, also presented an interesting trailer. Season also was something that seemed to me like a more indie game that has a different premisse, something for us to pay attention to.

Open Roads, by AnnaPurna Interactive, brought me memories of What Remains of Edith Finch. Although it has different graphics, it seems it’ll be pretty focused on the narrative and got me interested! Tchia also looked like a different and interesting premise with a story to make us laugh and cry, another title for us to pay attention.

But the one that dre more of my attention was It Takes Two! With a couple with a broken relationship, both are transformed in clay dolls and, in order to go back being human, they need to go through many colaborative challenges, fixing their relationship on the way – all of this narrated by a book that I swear it’ll someday become one of my favourite characters ever and I can’t wait to see cosplays. The game will focus on collaboration between two players, so let’s wait for a different and interesting gameplay for this one!

It Takes Two game image (image source: techtudo)

And you, what did you think of the awards? Did you like how the Game Awards went this year or would you change something? In addition, which of the announced games are you waiting for?

Let’s see what the next year edition will bring!

Most Expected Game

  • Elden Ring – GANHADOR
  • God of War: Ragnarok
  • Halo Infinite
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Zelda: Brath of the Wild – Continuação

I understand the hype for Elden Ring and how everyone is on the expectation. But, as a good fan of Resident Evil, I have to say I’m very eager for Village. What about you?

Known here on the Moon as Artemis, my name here on Earth is Kadine. I consider myself from Serra Negra – and I'm an Aries ascending in Scorpio. Interested on everything artistical, I have a weak spot for researching obscure things! Museum adventurer, I buy more books than I can read, super interested in other languages and cultures, tea and mug collector, writer on my free time and night gamer so I can rage with constant invaders on Dark Souls (and relax with Devil May Cry or Resident Evil).
